Insomnia Treatment (CBT-I)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia with Dr. Reginald J. Roberts in Amherst, near Buffalo. Drug-free help for adults who can’t sleep, especially when a racing mind won’t switch off.

Can't Sleep?

You get into bed exhausted, and then your mind switches on. You replay the day, worry about tomorrow, and watch the clock. Before long, bedtime itself feels stressful. At Buffalo Anxiety in Amherst, Dr. Roberts provides CBT-I, a structured way to treat insomnia without medication by changing the thoughts and habits that keep you awake.

Understanding Insomnia and Anxiety

Insomnia is ongoing trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early, even when you have time to rest, and it affects how you feel during the day. It often starts with stress, then lingers through habits and worry: long hours awake in bed, a racing mind, and anxiety about sleep itself. CBT-I is designed to break that cycle, and the American College of Physicians recommends it as the first-line treatment for chronic insomnia in adults.

How Our Insomnia Treatment Works:

A Plan Built Around Your Sleep

CBT-I is a short, structured program, typically around six to eight sessions, and may include:

Sleep Diary and Assessment:

An initial assessment and a short daily sleep diary show what is really happening at night and guide each step of your plan.

Sleep Scheduling:

A personalized schedule that often starts with less time in bed, adjusted weekly to build your natural sleep drive. You may feel sleepier at first.

Reconnecting Bed and Sleep:

Clear routines, known as stimulus control, that make your bed a place for sleep again, not for tossing, turning, and worrying.

Calming the Racing Mind:

CBT and mindfulness skills to ease nighttime worry, rethink unhelpful beliefs about sleep, and help your body relax.

Is CBT-I Right for You?

Who It Helps and What We Check First

  • Ongoing Trouble Sleeping:

For adults who have struggled for months to fall asleep, stay asleep, or stop waking too early, including when worry or a racing mind keeps you up.

  • With or Without Medication:

CBT-I is drug-free and can be used whether or not you currently take sleep medication. Please don't stop or change any medication without talking to your prescribing doctor.

  • Screening for Other Causes:

Loud snoring, gasping or breathing pauses, restless legs, or severe daytime sleepiness should be checked by a physician, sometimes with a sleep study. Dr. Roberts screens for these first.
